Recently we had a problem deciding what type of plumbing fixtures to put into our remolded bathroom. We were so excited about the work that we had done but my wife and I could not decide on what type of fixtures to put in the house.

I wanted to put in a brushed nickel fixture and she wanted to do an oil rub bronze. We have had brushed nickel before and I always felt like they were easy to keep clean and did not show water spots like an oil rub bronze would. My wife keeps telling me that I am not the one who has to clean anyways and that they both show the same amount of water spots she is just really good at cleaning the ones we have had.

We decided, of course, on the oil rub bronze plumbing fixtures as my wife is always right and they did match the stone and other things that we had chosen to do in our remodel. I have to admit that they looked really good and I am happy that she talked me into it.

I learned a couple of things from this experience. First, my wife is always right, I think that most men already know this but once again I needed to learn it. Second it doesn’t matter what color of plumbing fixtures you choose you are ultimately going to need to know who makes the best fixture for what you are needing. We ended up going with Moen and I have been very impressed thus far with the flow and valves they use in them.

I also learned, that you need to buy the correct type of fixture for the application it is needed for. My wife wanted a really long gooseneck faucet for the tub. I thought it was a great idea until I tried to install the piece she had purchased and could not make it work. Se was not to happy when I told her we were going to have to find something else. She did of course and we were able to successfully able to install it on the second try.

The last thing I learned was that you need to be careful when you install the fixture. When I installed the handle for the shower I somehow installed the cartridge incorrectly and could not get the hot water to turn on. It was so frustrating and took me taking the stupid thing apart several times before I realized that I had turned one piece just a little to much and it was preventing the handle from turning the hot water on.

So next time you have a plumbing project ask your wife first, find out what she is wanting and don’t just assume that it is what you had before. Make sure that when you purchase your fixture it will work where you would like to attach it and finally make sure you read the instructions or have a knowledge of how to install the cartridge and make the hot water work. This will keep you and your wife happy.
